The Clark Band will
participate in UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest on Tuesday, Feb. 12
at Clark High School, after school.
Who is
required to participate?
All Clark Band
students are required to participate in one solo or ensemble. If
desired, students may participate in two performances (maximum)
as follows:
-
1 solo and 1
ensemble (may be on same or different instruments)
-
2 solos
(must be on different instruments)
-
2 ensembles
(must be on different instruments)
Students have the option to play for a judge at the contest for
either a performance rating or for a band grade only. Medals will
be awarded to students who receive 1st Division ratings. No
medals are awarded to those who opt to perform for a grade.
Music selections (original score) are due to band directors
by Friday, Jan. 11
It is each student's responsibility to acquire
the sheet music for a solo or ensemble, or both. Sheet music may
be purchased at RBC Music (736-6902) or Southern
Music (226-8167).
An
original score must be turned in to the band directors
during your regular band class this Friday, Jan. 11. Due to
copyright laws, copies cannot be accepted.
Before
turning in your original score, make sure you:
-
Write your name phone
number on the sheet music.
-
Number each measure
of the piece, from beginning to end.
What are my
choices for musical selections?
To see a list of UIL-approved solo and ensemble selections,
access the
UIL Prescribed Music List (PML)
database search. Select the type of event you will participate
in (e.g., Bb Clarinet Solo, Saxophone Quartet) from the
drop-down list in the Event Name field.
Note:
Selections are based on level of difficulty, which is
indicated in the "Grade" column in the PML. ("Grade" is
sometimes also referred to as "Class.")
Grade, or Class, 1 = Most difficult; Grade 2 = Medium difficult;
Grade 3 = Least difficult.
Freshmen may perform a Grade 3 selection. Sophomore, junior
and senior students must perform a Grade 2 or 1 event. Students
should be careful in their selections and, if necessary, consult
one of the band directors for assistance in selecting a piece to
perform.
If I play a solo, do
I need a piano accompanist?
Most solos require a piano accompanist. Students performing a
solo for a rating must perform with an accompanist, if the
arrangement calls for one. This expense is paid by the student.
The going rate varies but is generally about $30 for several
rehearsals and a performance. The directors will provide more
information about accompanists soon.
Accompanists are not required for students who perform only for
a grade.
How does one
qualify for the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest?
Students become eligible to perform at the UIL Texas State Solo
& Ensemble Contest by achieving at least one of the following at
the February 12th competition:
-
Receive a 1st
Division rating for a Class 1 solo played by memory, and with
an accompanist, if applicable.
-
Receive a 1st
Division rating for Class 1 ensemble (memorization not
required).
The State Solo & Ensemble
Contest will be held in May 2008 at the University of Texas in
Austin.
If you have any questions, please call the directors at 397-5240.
